“Create a safer climate at schools across the country.”

4. Introduction to School Climate1
First, take 1 minute to write down your definition of school climate. Then, read through the document titled “What is School Climate and Why is it Important?”

5. 2 minute partner discussion
How did your definition of school climate align or differ from the one provided by the National School Climate Center?

6. Creating the Conditions for Learning
Flow chart with the three areas that comprise School Climate: Engagment, Safety and Environment. Under engagement is relationships, respect for diversity and school participation. Safety includes emotional safety, physical safety, and substance use. The environment includes the four areas of: physical environment, academic environment, wellness, and disciplinary environent. All of these elements contribute to the school climate within a building.

7. What would a positive, encouraging school climate look like?
Students know what is expected of them and choose to do so because they:
Know what to do
Have the skills to do it
See the natural benefits for acting responsibly
Adults and students have more time to:
Focus on relationships
Focus on classroom instruction
There is an instructional approach to discipline
Instances of problem behavior are opportunities to learn and practice pro-social behavior

As an overview of the best practices for supporting behavior, Dr. George Sugai will talk about School-wide Positive Behavioral Supports (SWPBIS)
