Smart Drain Personal Safety in the Kitchen
PROJECT MEMBERS Ted Selker Ken Giesecke APPROACH One of every 4 peaches & 1 of every 8 apples exposes a child of 5 and under to an unsafe level of organophosphates even after washing. We ingest a combination of different pesticides every day. Shouldn’t you wish to know when the run-off water from cleaning your fruits and vegetables contained a safe level of pesticides and other harmful agents? Do you really know how well your dishes are rinsed? If an indicator light can inform you that your water is filtered and safe to drink it wouldn’t it be useful to be provided with such an indication at the drain? A photospectrometer and LEDs housed next to the strainer in the kitchen drain identify tracer colors for the top five pesticides used.
