1 ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY
Supporting and Influencing the deposit of E-Theses in Higher Education 28th March 2011 Dr Nicky Cashman

2 History of the AU mandate
CADAIR 2006 Opt-out Mandate 2007 Opt-in mandate 2009 1 year of monitoring Policy review survey Report to RDB Opt-out mandate April 2010

3 What is it now? An opt-out mandate – the default position is that all theses and dissertations fulfilling requirements are to be available through CADAIR A mandatory electronic version of the thesis or dissertation (ETD) to be submitted along with hard copies Along with a signed 'Aberystwyth University Electronic Theses and Dissertations Publication Form'

4

5 What is the process? Hand in an e-version to the relevant department along with form and hard copies Department to forward the form and e-version to the repository adviser Repository adviser to check the form for the specific section signed and action to be taken Deposit accordingly – either full text or partial submission Embargoed theses – metadata only

6 Area for student details 3 sections for either
What is on the 'Aberystwyth University Electronic Theses and Dissertations Publication Form’? Area for student details 3 sections for either Full deposit – section A 2 year embargo – section B Full embargo – section C

7 Potential issues? Section A:
Where 3rd party copyright exists, attempts to be made by the student to remove problematic sections i.e. images/maps/tables. If 3rd party copyright or confidentiality issues only in appendices – do not deposit these sections If there is a difficulty in removing sections because it would radically change the nature of the research – deposit introductory chapter and bibliography if possible

8 Section B: Students requesting an automatic embargo must be aware that their work will be made available after the specified time scale An electronic version of an introductory chapter and the bibliography from the work will still be made available – this acts as a research resource, online visibility for the student and demonstrates AU postgraduate research output Consult the repository adviser for any further information regarding embargoes

9 Section C: Creative writing theses can fill Section C stating the reason for an indefinite embargo The abstract only will be made available through CADAIR Hard copy embargoes are dealt with by the Research Degree Board. Students should consult their supervisor and department
