Where do plants get their energy?
The Sun’s heat and light give energy to all organisms
Yet, this energy cannot directly start cell processes, it has to be changed into chemical energy
Plants capture energy from the sun… and convert it into chemical energy

5. Sun enters the ecosystem
Through Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis: plants use sunlight to form sugar molecules (chemical energy) called carbohydrates
Sugar molecules are made by plants taking in water and carbon dioxide (taken in by leaves)
Oxygen is produced (given off) by plants
Plants are producers

6. From Producers… An organism that makes its own food
Autotrophs: Known as a self feeder. Do not need food from other organisms
Examples: plants, trees, wheat

Plants are not alone, algae, protists and bacteria also go through photosynthesis
Since plants are multicellular (more than one cells), they can store more energy
Half of plant’s energy is stored as starch(carbs)

Process of breaking down food to produce energy
Cells use oxygen to release energy from food
Excess energy is stored as starch
Stimulus- produces a response from an organism
