2 Hair loss: An overview • Hair loss is medically referred to as Alopecia • Hair loss is of many types and has diverse symptoms and causes

3 Common types of hair loss Some common types of Alopecia are as follows: • Male- and female-pattern baldness • Alopecia areata • Scarring alopecia • Anagen effluvium • Telogen effluvium

4 Male- and female-pattern baldness Male-pattern baldness • Male-pattern baldness affects over half of all men by the age of 50. • Usually starts around the late 20s or early 30s and increases gradually • Receding hairline, hair thinningon the crown and temples, and a horseshoe like appearance around the back and sides of the head is observed • Male-pattern baldness is usually hereditary

5 Female pattern baldness • Hair usually only thins on top of the head
Female pattern baldness • Hair usually only thins on top of the head. • Causing factors are not clearly known • More common in post-menopausal women after an age of years

6 Alopecia Areata • Bald patchesof the size of a large coin are observed • Can occur at any age and common in teenagers and young adults • Can occur due to an immunological problem • Common in people with autoimmune disorders like hyperactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes or Down's syndrome

7 Scarring alopecia • Also called cicatricial alopecia, • Usually caused due complications of another condition • The hair follicle (the small hole in the skin from which an individual hair grows out of) is completely destroyed in Scarring alopecia. • Hair cannot grow back

8 Anagen effluvium • Hair loss affectingscalp, face and body • A common side-effect of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy (types of cancer treatment) • Anagen effluvium is usually temporary • Hair growth resume after cessation of chemotherapy

9 Telogen Effluvium • Diffused or widespread hair thinning rather than specific bald patches. • Can be caused due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, intense emotional and / or physical stress, short- or long-term illness, changes in your diet and use of some medications that can cause hair loss. • After falling, hair start to grow back within six months

10 Treating Hair loss • Male and female-pattern baldness don’t need treatment as they are natural part of ageing process and does not cause any health hazard • Treatment for male-pattern baldness can be done by two medications called finasteride (Generic Propecia and Proscar Generic) and minoxidil (Generic minoxidil) • Minoxidil can be used to treat female-pattern baldness • Alopecia areata is usually treated with steroid injections • Immunotherapy can also be used in any cases • Surgeries are also done when other treatment options don’t work • Common surgeries are: - Platelet rich plasma injection - Follicular unit transplantation - Follicular unit extraction - Rotational flap surgery - Scalp reduction - Hair cloning
