1 What to do… Open to page 40 in your notes. Answer the following question in the Think about it… Why do you think we reference groups as a family?

2 Families or Groups Standard 9.9: Use the periodic table to determine the properties of an element

3

4

5 Hydrogen The hydrogen square sits atop
Family A1, but it is not a member of that family. Hydrogen is in a class of its own. It’s a gas at room temperature. It has one proton and one electron in its one and only energy level. Hydrogen only needs 2 electrons to fill up its valence shell.

6

7 Alkali Metals The alkali family is found in the first column of the periodic table. Atoms of the alkali metals have a single electron in their outermost level, in other words, 1 valence electron, group 1A. They are shiny, have the consistency of clay, and are easily cut with a knife.

8 Alkali Metals They are the most reactive metals.
They react violently with water. Alkali metals are never found as free elements in nature. They are always bonded with another element.

9

10 What do you think? True or False:
Hydrogen is the most reactive element in the Alkali metals family.

11 What do you think? Yes or No:
Alkali metals are a shoppers dream because they are found free all around the place.

12 Alkaline Earth Metals They are never found uncombined in nature.
They have two valence electrons, group 2A. Alkaline earth metals include magnesium and calcium, among others.

13

14 Transition Metals Transition Elements include those elements in B groups 3-12 (short columns) They are good conductors of heat and electricity. Transition elements have 1 or 2 valence electrons, which they lose when they form bonds with other atoms. Some transition elements can lose electrons in their next-to-outermost level

15

16 Boron Family The Boron Family is named after the first element in the family. Atoms in this family have valence electrons, group 3A. This family includes a metalloid (boron), and the rest are metals. This family includes the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust (aluminum).

17

18 What do you think? True or False:
The metalloid Al is the most abundant element in the earths crust.

19 Carbon Family Atoms of this family have 4 valence electrons, group 4A.
This family includes a non-metal (carbon), metalloids, and metals. The element carbon is called the “basis of life.” There is an entire branch of chemistry devoted to carbon compounds called organic chemistry.

20

21 Nitrogen Family The nitrogen family is named after the element that makes up 78% of our atmosphere. This family includes non-metals, metalloids, and metals. Atoms in the nitrogen family have 5 valence electrons, 5A. They tend to share electrons when they bond.

22

23 Oxygen Family Atoms of this family have 6 valence electrons, 6A.
Most elements in this family share electrons when forming compounds. Oxygen is the most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It is extremely active and combines with almost all elements.

24

25 What do you think? What Family has a member that makes up the majority of our atmosphere? A. Carbon B. Oxygen C. Nitrogen

26 Halogen Family Halogens have 7 valence electrons, 7A, which explains why they are the most active non-metals. They are never found free in nature. Halogen atoms only need to gain electron to fill their outermost energy level. They react with alkali metals to form salts.

27

28 Noble Gases Noble Gases are colorless gases that are extremely un-reactive. One important property of the noble gases is their inactivity. They are inactive because their outermost energy level is full, 8A. Because they do not readily combine with other elements to form compounds, the noble gases are called inert. All the noble gases are found in small amounts in the earth's atmosphere.

29

30 Rare Earth Elements The thirty rare earth elements are composed of the lanthanide and actinide series. One element of the lanthanide series and most of the elements in the actinide series are called trans-uranium, which means synthetic or man-made.

31

32 What do you think? This family has the potential to season my potatoes. A. Halogens B. Rare earth C. Noble gases

33 OH to be Inert. What do you think? A. Alkali metals B. Boron group
C. Oxygen family D. Noble gases

34 DO! Fill in the missing information from this chart using a periodic table. Group List A or B Period Symbol Element M, NM, MD

35 Keys to Understanding Write at least 3 sentences
Summarize the notes in your OWN WORDS Explain the main ideas from the lesson

36 Putting it together... 1. Complete the Famous Table Skill Sheet
2. Work time for coloring your periodic table – metals, non-metals, and metalloids
