Presentation on theme: "Newton's First Law of Motion"— Presentation transcript:

1 Newton's First Law of Motion
An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

2 Newton's Second Law of Motion
an object will only accelerate if there is a net or unbalanced force acting upon it. F = m x a

3 Newton's Third Law of Motion
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

4 Scalars are quantities which are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone.
Vectors are quantities which are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction. Momentum -the quantity of motion that an object has, Momentum = mass • velocity , In physics, the symbol for the quantity momentum is the lower case "p". Thus, the above equation can be rewritten as p = m • v

5 The Law of Momentum Conservation
For a collision occurring between object 1 and object 2 in a closed system, the total momentum of the two objects before the collision is equal to the total momentum of the two objects after the collision. That is, the momentum lost by object 1 is equal to the momentum gained by object 2.

6 Newton - unit used to measure force
Resultant - final amount and direction of a force Vector - an arrow that shows the strength and direction of a force Work - a force that acts over a distance, Work = force x distance, W = F x d Joules - units used to measure work, Joules = Newtons x meters, J = N x m

7 Friction - force that opposes the motion of an object
Lubricate – to apply material to reduce friction
