Landforms

Unit Standards 5.E.3A.1 Construct how different landforms and surface features result from the location and movement of water on Earth’s surface through watersheds (drainage basins) and rivers. 5.E.3A.2 Develop and use models to describe and compare characteristics and locations of the landforms on continents with those on the ocean floor (including the continental self and slope, the mid ocean ridge, the rift zone, the trench, and the abyssal plain). 5.E.3B.1 Analyze and interpret data to describe and predict how natural processes (such as weathering, erosion, deposition, earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, or storms) affect Earth’s surface.

What is weathering? Weathering- the slow process that breaks rocks down into smaller pieces.

What is weathering? Flowing water, rain, and wind are some factors that can cause weathering.

What is weathering? Physical weathering- Rocks change size and shape without changing their chemical makeup

What is weathering? Flowing water from streams and rivers make sharp rocks smooth. Waves crashing onto a cliff can break off small pieces of land.

What is weathering? Rainfall may seep through small cracks in a rock.
Cycles of freezing and melting can widen the cracks.

What is weathering? Living things also cause physical weathering. Plant roots can force their way through cracks in a rock.

What is weathering? As the plant grows, its roots become stronger. The strong roots can cause the rock to break apart.

What is weathering? Chemical weathering- changes the minerals that make up rocks.

What is weathering? Oxygen, acids, and carbon dioxide all cause chemical weathering and changes the minerals into new substances.

What is weathering? Rocks that have iron in them can rust. Water and carbon dioxide can form limestone caves. Even living things such as lichens, can soften the rocks they grow on.
