2 Why? To acknowledge where your information was gathered and give the sources the credit they deserve. To prevent plagiarism. Required in all research projects (essays, presentations, reports etc.).

3 Works Cited MLA Format. Handout is a tool – you will never have to create a works cited page without it. Each source type has its own formula. Follow it VERY carefully – punctuation and spacing matters! A copy of the handout is also available on my website.

10 Incorporating another person's exact words into your own writing.
Direct Quotations: Incorporating another person's exact words into your own writing. Short Quotation (no more than four lines) Enclosed in quotation marks. Citation at the end of the sentence in parenthesis. Citation (Author’s Last Name Page #) or (Author’s Last Name) or (Title of Webpage) Example: Gender disparity in the country remains a huge obstacle as, “Women are asked not just if they are willing to join, but whether their male relatives will give them permission.” (Walther)

11 Long Quotation (more than four lines)
No quotation marks. Block style (single spaced, indented one inch from the left margin and one inch from the right) Citation at the end of the sentence in parenthesis. Citation (Author’s Last Name Page #) or (Author’s Last Name) or (Title of Webpage) Example: Pregnancy out of wedlock is extremely forbidden in Somali and Muslim culture: Most unmarried Somali girls who got pregnant committed suicide. I knew of one girl in Mogadishu who poured a can of gasoline over herself in the living room, with everyone there, and burned herself alive. Of course, if she hadn't done this, her father and brothers would probably have killed her anyway. (Ali 56)

17 Assignment Create a proper works cited page from the list of sources provided. TYPE it or complete it in INK (blue/black). Assessment: /10 8 points = 8 1pt. each 0.5 point = proper alphabetical order 0.5 point = proper indenting and spacing 0.5 point = proper title 0.5 point = citations not numbered or bulleted
