1 ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT DESIGN & MANUFACTURE

2 CONTENTS During this slide show, we are going to consider and discuss the stages that are gone through when a circuit board is produced. These stages comprise of: Designing the circuit layout Producing the initial way the circuit visual appearance Etching the actual physical Printed Circuit Board Hole to be drilled that support the components Applying the solder that will fix the components in place This is known as surface mount manufacturing.

3 Design the layout. Layout should include tracks and pads for components to be soldered on to. Can be done on a computer, and should involve the least number of joints as possible.

4 Produce the artwork. The layout can be printed on to acetate and then transferred to the copper board using a UV light box

5 Etch the PCB. The circuit board is developed using a chemical developer, then placed into a warm bath of ferric chloride to remove the unwanted copper.

6 Drill holes in the board.
A PCB drill is used to produce 1mm holes, or smaller, in each pad where components will be soldered.

7 Solder components on to the board.
Components are placed through from the plain side of the board so that the leads pass through the copper tracks and pads. They are then soldered to the copper.

8 SURFACE MOUNT TECHNOLOGY
This can either be done by hand which you will do here, or via machine which is the method used in mass production which the vast majority of things manufactured these days. What are the advantages and disadvantages of surface mount manufacturing?????????? YOU REALLY DO NEED TO FIND THIS OUT!!!!!!!!!!!
