1 Alcohol

2 What is alcohol? A powerful and addictive drug
Depressant: What happens when you drink alcohol? Enters the bloodstream Is broken down in the liver As much as possible, depending how much you drink Circulates throughout the body

3 Alcohol comes in many forms
Each type of alcoholic beverage has a different concentration of alcohol SO different amounts are considered ‘1 drink’ Energy Drink Punch Malt Beverage Beer Wine Liquor

4 It arises naturally from carbohydrates: fermentation.
Beer, wine and other liquor contain different amounts of alcohol (Proof) Proof: 100 = 50%, 40= 20% Wine has around 8-14% Beer has around 4-6%

5 Alcohol works as an ANESTHETIC, gradually numbing the senses
Effects on the body Alcohol works as an ANESTHETIC, gradually numbing the senses BRAIN AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM First effected: Thinking, judgment and reasoning abilities More drinking leads to: Breathing and reflexes are impaired

6

7 Stomach This is where some alcohol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream Alcohol stimulates the stomach to secrete more acid Heavy use can lead to ULCERS and even CANCER!

8 Lungs unconsciousness, coma and even death
Some alcohol is exhaled through the breathing process. This is why you can smell alcohol on a person’s breath Exceptionally high alcohol levels can result in unconsciousness, coma and even death through the suppression of the brain's breathing center, the cerebellum.

9 This is the 6th leading cause of adult deaths in the United States.
Liver Alcohol is typically broken down at a pace of 1 drink per 1-2 hours Long-term heavy drinking : Fat accumulates in the liver Eventually become non-functional due to scar tissue Cirrhosis This is the 6th leading cause of adult deaths in the United States.

11 Kidneys Alcohol is a diuretic
Drinking alcohol on a hot day greatly increases the likelihood of dehydration

12 Cardiovascular System
VASODILATOR Opens up blood vessels, especially those close to the surface of the skin Gives drinkers a feeling of warmth, even though their body temperature may be dropping

13 How does alcohol travel through the body?
Once alcohol reaches the stomach it begins to break down the alcohol dehydrogenate enzyme. (Women produce less) 20% of the alcohol then enters the blood. Alcohol is then absorbed in the upper portion of the small intestine.

14 How does alcohol travel through the body?
The alcohol-laden blood then travels to the liver via the veins and capillaries of the digestive tract. The liver cells are the only cells in our body that can produce enough enzyme to oxidize alcohol at a decent rate. Alcohol effects all organs, but its most dramatic affect is on the liver.

15 Example: Mouth would be labeled 1.
Activity With your group, trace one members body. After doing this, create a diagram of the different body parts that alcohol affects. Write exactly how it affects that area as well as labeling the pat h alcohol takes through the body (number them). Example: Mouth would be labeled 1.

16 Exit Ticket Question: What are 2 effects of alcohol on the body?
Journal: What effects of alcohol was I previously unaware of?
