5 Helping your child with Maths
Number and place value I can count to 100 forwards and backwards in 1s, 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. I can recognise odd and even numbers. I can use the equals sign to show ‘the same’, and the inequality signs (˂ and ˃). Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division I can add two or three single digit numbers together. I can find the difference between 2 two digit numbers. I know the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. I can divide by sharing, using objects or drawings. Decimals, fractions and percentages I know the £ and p symbols, and can write amounts of money using these symbols. I can read decimal notations for amounts of money. I can draw ½ and ¼ of a shape. Measure I can measure mass in kg and g, and compare mass of different objects. I can measure length using cm and m, and compare the lengths of different objects. I can measure capacity using ml and l, and compare the capacities of different containers. I can read the temperature in degrees Celsius from a thermometer.

7 Teacher Assessment -Based on the work the children have done throughout the year -Based on day to day assessment -Based on more formal assessments during the year. These are done on a half termly basis.

8 Assessing without levels
Government changes in assessment mean that schools are now assessing children’s attainment in a new way. This will now mean that children are assessed to be working broadly below, at or above the expected level for their year group. The assessments are on-going throughout the year. Westerton is now using- STAT Sheffield.

The pupil can write a narrative about their own and others’ experiences (real and fictional), after discussion with the teacher: demarcating most sentences with capital letters and full stops and with some use of question marks and exclamation marks using sentences with different forms in their writing (statements, questions, exclamations and commands) using some expanded noun phrases to describe and specify using present and past tense mostly correctly and consistently using co-ordination (or / and / but) and some subordination (when / if / that / because) segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly spelling many common exception words* spelling some words with contracted forms* adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing e.g. –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly* using the diagonal and horizontal strokes needed to join letters in some of their writing writing capital letters and digits of the correct size, orientation and relationship to one another and to lower case letters using spacing between words that reflects the size of the letters.

11 Other Matters We will be having at least one trip in Year 2. This will happen in the Summer term. There will also be opportunities for special activity days and themed days that will be undertaken throughout the school.

18 General Information Money-
We now use Parent Pay – an online payment system. Clothing- Please make sure that every item of clothing that your child brings into school is clearly labelled Please send your child to school with a coat each day as the weather may change Water bottle Jewellery- No jewellery should be worn at school. If it is a PE day and your child has pierced ears they should either not wear the studs or bring their own tape to school to cover the studs
