2 Aims of the session To find out about how we teach reading across the school The reasons for changing our approach to teaching reading To find out about our next steps as a school in developing reading To find out about Reading Eggs

3 Whole Class Reading Sessions
Following a lot of work and discussion last term we have made changes to how we teach reading This year we have moved to whole class reading sessions in Years 1 to 6 Children will be taught the reading skills as a whole class Sessions will be four times a week and will last 30 minutes

4 Reading Sessions The reading sessions follow this format:
Introduction/Modelling- introduction of an interactive teaching text on the white board Children listen to the audio that matches the text The teacher works with children and uses the text to model how to answer questions linked to the main objective. Applying- children are given an activity text and they answer questions related to the reading objective the class is focusing on. These skills are also applied across other subjects and to the quality texts being read during the main English lesson.

5 Reading Content Domains
The content domain sets out the relevant elements from the national curriculum programme of study for reading. (These are all on the school website- class pages tab.) KS1 Reading Content domain reference KS2 Reading Content domain reference 1a draw on knowledge of vocabulary to understand texts 2a give / explain the meaning of words in context 1b identify / explain key aspects of fiction and non-fiction texts, such as characters, events, titles and information 2b retrieve and record information / identify key details from fiction and non-fiction 1c identify and explain the sequence of events in texts 2c summarise main ideas from more than one paragraph 1d make inferences from the text 2d make inferences from the text / explain and justify inferences with evidence from the text 1e predict what might happen on the basis of what has been read so far 2e predict what might happen from details stated and implied 2f identify / explain how information / narrative content is related and contributes to meaning as a whole 2g identify / explain how meaning is enhanced through choice of words and phrases 2h make comparisons within the text

6 Why change? Reading is a priority for the school this year
Our aim is for all children to develop the love for reading and make outstanding progress from their starting points The Year 6 team trialled the whole class reading approach last year. Feedback from them was positive There was an increase in results at the end of Year 6 % of the children achieved the expected standard and above 2017 – 91% of the children achieved the expected standard and above. National average- 71% so Southfield was well above the national average

7 Next steps in developing reading
Develop reading areas in the classroom We would like to develop the involvement of parent/carers in their child’s learning Develop the system of home/school reading

8 Reading Eggs Reading Eggs is an online reading program that helps children learn to read Teacher have had training on how to use this Please encourage your child to use it at home
