1 Assignment # The Structure of DNA
Biology Mrs. McCarthy July 30, 2018

2 Prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus
Example: bacteria Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus surrounded by a nuclear membrane Examples: ALL cells except bacteria

3 I. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid
DNA is found in the nucleus of the cell DNA is the genetic material in each cell DNA controls the chemical processes and determines which proteins will be made by the cell

4 II. DNA is made up of nucleotides 5 Carbon sugar called deoxyribose
Phosphate group One of 4 nitrogen bases Adenine Thymine Cytosine Guanine D. Many, many nucleotides make up a single DNA molecule

5 III. DNA is in the form of a double helix
The sides of the ladder are the phosphate groups The rung connections are the deoxyribose sugar The rungs are the nitrogen bases Only certain nitrogen bases can pair up with each other Adenine pairs with thymine Cytosine pairs with guanine

6 D. The base pairs of the rungs (A-T& C-G) are held together by hydrogen bonds that are easily broken

7 IV. Label this diagram of a strand of DNA:

8 V. Write the letters for the matching nucleotides on the strand of DNA.
Remember, Adenine always pairs with Thymine. Cytosine always pairs with Guanine.

9 Each group of three nucleotides is called a gene
Each group of three nucleotides is called a gene. (write this on your paper) This is Gene.

10 Listen to how the “Y” chromosome (male) has been musically expressed.
To be true to the DNA of the genetic code, the actual ATCG  base pair sequences need be maintained in DNA music.  This is by nature very restrictive.  Just as adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine are in themselves complex molecules, the musical phrases used to portray them can also be somewhat complex.  Listen to how the “Y” chromosome (male) has been musically expressed.

11 Listen to how the “X” chromosome (female) has been musically expressed.

12 Activity Build a model of DNA using the pieces provided. Here is a key of the pieces: Black pentagon pieces = deoxyribose sugar White tubes = phosphates Red tubes = guanine Blue tubes = thymine Green tubes = adenine Black tubes = cytosine Clear connectors = hydrogen bonds

13 Journal Entry # July 30, 2018 Sketch your DNA model in the journal section of your notebook. Draw it like a ladder. Label one phosphate, one deoxyribose, one hydrogen bond, and ALL of your nitrogen base pairs.
