2 The HiRadMat Facility Key assets Study the impact of intense pulsed beams on materials Thermal management (heating) material damage even below melting point material vaporization (extreme conditions) Radiation damage to materials – change of properties Thermal shock - beam induced pressure waves Test bed, important for the design validation of LHC near-beam components before installation in the machine Requires LHC-type beam from pilot to 288 nominal bunches Foreseen clients : LHC collimators, material studies (bulk, superconductors), high-power targetry, irradiation tests of electronics I. Efthymiopoulos CERN, October

Efthymiopoulos CERN, October

5 The HiRadMat Facility Irradiation area layout in the TT60/WANF tunnel
Cleanup the WANF tunnel Dismantle/condition WANF equipment Horns/He-tanks could be stored locally until disposal path (and budget) agreed Move the rest to waste Maintain escape passage from tunnel end Test area upstream the T9 target Convert T9 target to a beam dump Remove target head and replace with special blocks like in CNGS hadron stop: graphite core, Al plates with (water) cooling Add lateral shielding (concrete) Reuse blocks from T1 (TAX area) to complete the downstream shielding I.Efthymiopoulos, CERN

6 The HiRadMat Project News since last meeting Project review on January’09 - review panel from S. Myers, F. Bordry, P. Collier, V. Vuillemin Positive feedback, no major issues found, requested to clarify few budget lines – no discussion on manpower The creation of the HiRadMat facility was included and recommended in the summary Memo from the Irradiation Facilities WG chaired by Lucie Linssen Presented and discussed during the LHC Collimation Phase-II workshop in April ’09 Specification document for the facility is available – last version dated December 15, 2008 I. Efthymiopoulos CERN, October

7 The HiRadMat Project Reminder and news Thanks to the efforts of all, Ralph in particular, the project got finally green light for Construction, Installation and Operation of the facility The HiRadMat Project is included in the CERN MTP with sufficient funds for three years : 2010, 2011, 2012 Project PPA : FOT-PRJ Project leader : Ilias Efthymiopoulos EN/MEF (I was told!) Target dates : First beam in the facility by June 2011 then two months of commissioning First users by Q4 2011 HiRadMat is also included in EUCARD/FP7 project as Transnational Access Funds available to support EU users for the exploitation of the facility – within limits! 12 The HiRadMat Facility Very challenging !!! Tentative schedule
Profit the most from the 3days stops / month during the LHC 2009/2010 run Very challenging !!! I. Efthymiopoulos CERN, October

13 The HiRadMat Facility Open issues User specifications
Is the foreseen area enough? How many stands ? Finalize specs document – check with other users to incorporate their needs in the design Define operational modes – some use cases? Would the area be used for irradiations ? Area infrastructure What type of ventilation do we need ? CNGS type or something lighter? Do we need a fully remote crane ? Monitoring needs ? (primary beam and radiation ?) Proton beam Finalize on beam parameters and define tune margin Beam and dump windows Beam dump – do we need cooling ? RP and safety considerations for the facility  simulations and safety file to prepare I. Efthymiopoulos CERN, October

14 The HiRadMat Facility Next steps
Prepare for each WG the work packages and the resources request for all groups and services Enter the information in APT as DRAFT work units; indicate manpower, deliverables and budget request Once everything is put in place (< mid November’09) we will convert them to active wu and distribute the budged for 2010 Include budget estimates and spending profile: 2010, 2011, 2012 (left over, also operation!) Budget codes distribution – proposal : General – project Safety - project Two per WG : titles ? If there are expenses possible in 2009 let me know asap ! Project web page : Project workspace : \\cern.ch\dfs\Workspaces\h\HiRadMat Indico space : EDMS tree : next week I. Efthymiopoulos CERN, October
