1. Health 6. Money 2. Freedom 7. Car 3. A partner 8. Friends 4. Children 9. Family nearby 5. Safety 10. A job you love

2 Imagine that you’ve been offered the chance for an adventure
Imagine that you’ve been offered the chance for an adventure. You’ve been talking to the person of your dreams that you’ve met on the internet who’s offered you an amazing life with them abroad. You’ll have fun, you’ll be safe, you’ll have everything provided for you, you’ll have new friends and family. Would you go?

3 How would you feel if the reality was so different?

4 The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)
To know about ISIS and how it formed. To consider the realities of what it’s like to be in ISIS.

5 Who are ISIS? In pairs read through the information about ISIS.
See if you can answer these questions: What do you think were the main reasons for ISIS to form? Why do you think ISIS are killing other Muslims? Why do you think most Muslims would say ISIS were not true Muslims?

6 What do you think the reality is like?
Most of the time many young men and women are groomed over the internet by people from ISIS, promising them an adventurous, fulfilling life. What do you think the reality is like?

7 What is it really like? Watch this

8 How do ISIS recruit? 1 Guess the symbols: 4 3 2 5

9 ISIS Propaganda ISIS uses twitter to send information to the online community and allows ISIS to tweet from users’ personal accounts, thereby gaining the ability to spread its message in exponential proportions. They use hashtag campaigns that help the group’s propaganda trend on Twitter, are similar to the PR campaigns of a corporate company. In other words, they’re incredibly manipulative.

10 However, a lot of the time their jobs are made easier by young people who are self-radicalising themselves by looking their videos up on the internet. Where could people go to instead of the internet if they felt isolated?

11 What sort of person are ISIS directing their marketing at?
What do you think recruiters from ISIS promise or tell people what joining them would be like? Why do you think people decide to join? What do you think the realities are like? How easy do you think it would be for someone to change their mind who has gone out to join ISIS? Would it be harder for a man or woman to leave?

12 Decide what you think the opposite reality is being promised for women joining ISIS:
They will have a devout Jihadi husband. They will get married but their husband may take on more wives or many are abusing women in places they take over. If a woman’s jihadi husband dies this leaves her in a vulnerable position as to where she will go next. 2. The opportunity to have a family. This comes at the expense of not being able to talk or see your family at home. 3. To have a new and exciting adventure. One ISIS recruiter is quoted saying the woman’s main role ‘here is to support her husband and his jihad’ 4. To have new freedoms Behaviour, dress, movements and many other things are controlled by ISIS. This are imposed severely and freedom is restricted.

13 How safe are you online? Take the internet safety quiz to determine how good your internet safety knowledge is to protect you from people online.

14 Task Sara has been chatting to a woman from ISIS on line who is convincing her to come to Syria to marry an ISIS fighter and serve the cause as his wife. Create a facebook chat between Sara replying to the recruiter online Think about: -What things might the recruiter say to her to get her to join? What would Sara argue back? What would the realities be like of joining ISIS?
