Prior to routine varicella vaccine use, the highest incidence of chickenpox was among infants and children 1 to 4 years of age (ie, cases per 1,000 infants and children), probably due to the early exposure to varicella-zoster virus in preschool and child care settings in the absence of vaccine protection.
