1 HOW “DE WEY” DO? The scope of this PowerPoint is to provide a clear understanding of the Media Center for middle school students and how to make it work for them

2 All books have a place in the Media Center… Let’s see how important this is for us to know
Often times middle school students don’t believe presentations are fun or necessary. This slide will have a pretest in which students probably won’t know half of the answers and this will prompt them to have to pay attention to the rest… Click me Click me Pre /Post test

3 Categorizing Books 101 Books are placed into two categories:
Fiction and Nonfiction What does fiction and nonfiction mean? What is an example of each? Since this is for middle school students they should be able to answer these questions easily, if not give full definition: Fiction=not true/Nonfiction=true is the website where texts are listed as part of the frameworks for ELA-fiction and non fiction

4 Categorizing books 102 Call Numbers Each book is assigned
a number, letter or both numbers and letters. Based on the letters and/or numbers assigned to each book determines where it is shelved.

5 Dewey Decimal Classification System
Categorizing books 103 Dewey Decimal Classification System The DDC was developed by Melvil Dewey who, at the time, was a college student. He went on to create the first library school. His system is used in all libraries/Media Centers in order for anyone in any library or Media Center to be able to locate any book. Call numbers for non fiction books are arranged by ten different subjects, ranging from 000 – 900

6 So… what and how are the numbers and letters assigned to each book?
