Galactic Theme Park Open ended Maths project for year 5
2
The year is Man is now colonising Outer Space and you have decided to open the first Galactic theme park in history.
3
You have a spending a limit of $5 000000
You must carefully decide what sort of rides you are going to have. You also need to think about the other facilities visitors will need when they come to your theme park like toilets, cafes, shops and paths between all the facilities and rides. You have a spending a limit of $ - Cool stuff for nerdy teachers

Many theme parks have different areas that are ‘themed’
Many theme parks have different areas that are ‘themed’. In other words they might have an African area, a wild west American area or an Old England area. Think carefully about what you want to have in yours. You must carefully decide what sort of rides you are going to have.
5
Task 1: 30 pts Setting up your theme park
You will need to take on board the following information:- Use an A3 piece of graph paper to design your theme park. You must use a scale of 1 square : 10m2. The spending limit is $5,000,000 , which must not be exceeded. There must be car parks for your visitors to use. You will need to allow 10m² for every 2 cars and assume that there is an average of 3 people visiting per car. There must be toilets for your visitors to use. You will need 1 toilet block per 1000 people visiting. There must be cafes and shops for your visitors to use. There must be a queuing area around each ride, based on an estimation of how many visitors will use the ride per hour.
7
Task 2: 10pts “How can we see everything?”
Create a pamphlet that offers the ideal route for adults and the ideal route for children to take through the park. Be sure to include map coordinates and compass directions so the customers know where they’re going.
8
Task 3: 10pts Income On average, each visitor will spend $15 at each café and $10 in each shop plus their entry fee of $27. Total $ How many people do you need to have come to the park to make your money back? (How many people do you need to redeem your $5,000,000?)
9
Task 4: 15 pts Advertising You have to decide on the type of advertising you want to use to promote your theme park. Examples are given on the next slide. Design your advert. Present it to the class. Your class will give you a rating of 1, 2 or 3 depending on how good they think your advert is, 3 being the best. The number of extra visitors your advert will bring in per day depends on your rating. Work out the total extra profit you will get from your advertising?

The more points you receive the bigger the reward!
As you complete each task, Mrs. Gardner will allocate you a certain amount of points. The highest number of points you can earn for each task is the number of points that task is worth. For example, Task 1: 30pts. In Week 8 of this term (that’s the 2nd last week of term) you will present your advertisements if they are ready. The extra profit you earn will be added to the total amount of points you have earned from Mrs. Gardner. You may complete the tasks in any order AFTER THE FIRST TASK HAS BEEN DONE. After Task 1 is completed you can complete the other 3 tasks in whatever order you choose. Any task that is incomplete (not finished) will need to be handed in during Week 8 and points will be allocated depending on what has been done and the quality of your work. (Don’t worry: Mrs. Gardner will be helping you work it all out along the way).

Your Rewards You get to choose your rewards! Of course these will need to be sensible and get the approval of your teachers and parents. List your suggested rewards from the biggest reward to the smallest on the next page. Below is an example: 80 points and over: Free time on IPads 1 x day at school for a week. 60-80 points: Go to lunch early every day for a week. 40-60 points: Going in to another class for a morning (eg: Pre Primary) 20-40 points: Choose a game for everyone to play during class/IMAGINeers. 20 points and under: Certificate of Achievement
