2. Working together….
Reading together at home is one of the easiest and most important ways in which you can help your child.
Developing their knowledge of phonics enables your child to become an effective and confident reader.
From Reception and through Key Stage 1, children are engaged in daily phonics sessions.

3. Phonemes and graphemes…
A letter consists of ; a sound, a shape and it has capital form and lower case form.

The letter sound= phoneme
There are 44 phonemes in the English Language
(24 consonant and 20 vowel sounds)
Please collect a hand out at the end with full details of the 44 phonemes

4. Letters and Sounds….
As a school we are following Government guidance with regards to 6 phases of phonics teaching. This six phase teaching programme focuses on high quality phonic work.
By the end of Year 2, children should have completed phase 6. Which phase the children should be working on is assessed by the teacher, and appropriate teaching is planned for.

6. The Phonics Screening Check
What is it?
The phonics screening check is carried out in the summer term of Year One.
The screening check is a quick and easy check of your child’s phonic knowledge.
They are asked to read 40 words aloud.
The check contains a mixture of real words and ‘non-words’.

7. Why use non-words?
Non-words are important to include because words such as ‘vap’ or ‘jound’ are new to all children. Children cannot read the non-words by using their memory or vocabulary, they have to use their decoding skills. This is a fair way to assess their ability to decode.
