2 Objectives At the end of this presentation, attendees will be about to: list at least five benefits of breastfeeding, name at least three partners they can include in improving maternity care practices in their community or state, and describe at least one method of collaborating with public and private organizations to prevent obesity using evidenced based practices.

3 Breastfeeding has many health benefits for moms, children and communities
Moms have lover risks of Type 2 diabetes Some types of breast cancer Ovarian Cancer Breastfeeding may also help mom’s return to pre-pregnancy weight faster Infants have reduced Asthma Reduced childhood obesity diabetes Childhood leukemia SIDs Respiratory infections Communities benefit from breastfeeding through Decreased absenteeism from work for moms and dads Lower insurance costs More productive work force Less trash from infant formula cans and bottle supplies

4 Mississippi’s Breastfeeding Rates
According to the CDC 2016 Breastfeeding Report Card, Mississippi has the lowest breastfeeding initiation and duration rates (using 2013 data) – we are 51st

5 In 2015, the largest private insurance company in Mississippi, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, expanded their Maternity Care Quality Care to require all delivering hospitals across the state to gain Baby-Friendly designation in order to be considered a network provider. Mississippi is the first state in the nation where a private insurance carrier has helped to lead the charge in this public health area. There are innovative, unique partnerships are being created in Mississippi to improve breastfeeding initiation and duration rates.

6 Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff. Train all health care staff in the skills necessary to implement this policy. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they are separated from their infants. Give infants no food or drink other than breast-milk, unless medically indicated. Practice rooming in - allow mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day. Encourage breastfeeding on demand. Give no pacifiers or artificial nipples to breastfeeding infants. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or birth center.
