How do I know I can use something?

2 What is a Copyright? The exclusive legal right to produce, to perform in public, or publish an original literary or artistic work

So What is Copyrighted? Almost everything created privately and originally after March 1, 1989 is copyrighted, whether it has a copyright notice or not However, teachers and students get a break called. . .

4 Fair Use The copying is for educational use
The original material is mainly facts, lacks originality, and is published You use a few portions to make your point and not the whole work You are not taking potential sales away from the owner

5 Here are the Guidelines
Motion Media (such as a movie) Up to 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less for a single copyrighted motion media work

6 Guidelines Continued Text Material
Up to 10% or 1000 words, whichever is less of a single copyrighted work of text

7 Music, Lyrics, Music Video
Guidelines Continued Music, Lyrics, Music Video Up to 10% NO more than 30 seconds of music and lyrics from a single musical work

8 Guidelines Continued Illustrations and Photographs
Can be used in their entirety NO more than 5 images by same artist/illustrator NOT more than 10% or 15 images,whichever is less from a published collected work

9 Making Copies Including the original, only a limited amount of copies may be made of your project -Two use copies -Additional copy for preservation -You may retain one copy

10 Acknowledgements ALWAYS credit your source-you would want to be recognized for something you created wouldn’t you? Credit your source by including: -copyright symbol -year of first publication -name of copyright holder
