Paper No: TD0141 An Experimental Analysis of the Effect of Icing on Wind Turbine Rotor Blades Raja Muhammad Imran, D. M. Akbar Hussain, Mohsen Soltani Aalborg University, Denmark

2 Background Power extracted is a function of coefficient of power (Cp).
Experimental investigation of the aerodynamic changes due to icing Tested three small scale model of the NREL’s 5MW rotor blade in a Wind Tunnel. Lift, drag and moment coefficients are calculated WT-Perf is used to predict the performance of wind turbine. Cp curves generated from the test are compared What is the background of this project? What did you do? Why did you do it? What did you expect as an outcome before you started?

3 Experiment Method Source: Martin O. L. Hansen, Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines, 2nd ed. Earth- Scan, London, ISBN:

4 Experiment Limitations
Coefficient values from the experiment at 60% radius of the blade Coefficient values from the mean value of 200 samples Cylindrical mounting shape to fit the wind tunnel device Entire blade is made from the same material WT-Perf with only one Reynolds number

5 Results What did you discover/find out?

6 Results

7 Conclusions/Recommendations
Wind Tunnel Experiment test procedure Peak value of Cp reduced and shape unchanged lead edge ice Peak value of Cp reduced and shape changed for lead-trail edge ice Maximum Cp value reduce with the increase of ice Need for adaptive mechanism Shape changed should be accommodated in control What does your paper conclude? What further research is required? Are there any differences from what you expected? PLEASE DO NOT ADD SLIDES. YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED 7 SLIDES TOTAL AND 7 MINUTES TO PRESENT THEM

8 Thanks for your attention!
