1 Bell Ringer: Open your IAN to your IG/Sed notes
Bell Ringer: Open your IAN to your IG/Sed notes. 6 minute silent review for your quiz!!! Look at your Igneous Rock visual organizer. Review your WEDCC definitions. Know your 3 types of Sed Rocks!!!

2 Done? Turn in quiz to blue tub on rainbow table.
Next, Open textbook to p. 106. Silent read Ch.4-4, p Check your understanding by answering the Section Review, #1-4 in your IAN.

3 Please glue/copy into your IAN! Metamorphic Rocks
Chapter 4.4 Objectives: Describe two ways a rock can undergo metamorphism. Describe the difference between foliated and non-foliated metamorphic rock.

4

5 I. Complete Change in Shape A. Caterpillar > Butterfly
B. Dry cookie dough ingredients > Gooey Cookies II. Origins of Change (2 step process) A. Heats, not melts degrees c B. Pressure = depth > 2km-16km C. Two Categories! 1. Contact Metamorphism a. Magma chambers heat b. Near Igneous Intrusions 2. Regional Metamorphism a. Large crust collides and gives pressure b.Deformed rock below Silly Putty example ( stretch bands into rocks 30x the size)

6 Review the 2 classifications of these rocks.
Draw on Me!

7 Composition A. Original Minerals become new! 1. Index Minerals (Chlorite, Mica, Garnet) 2. Example Below!

8

9 2 Types of Texture Foliated – the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands. Examples : Slate, gneiss

10 2 Types of Texture Nonfoliated – the texture in which the mineral grains are not arranged in planes or bands Examples: quartzite, Marble Sandstone + Quartz = Quartzite Limestone + Calcite = Marble

11 Deformation: (Silly Putty)
1. Squeezed or Stretched 30x the size 2. Creates folds and bands

12

13 In Summary: Metamorphic Rocks
Meta. Rocks occur when the structure, texture or composition has changed. Heat and pressure can change the existing minerals into new minerals. Metamorphic rock structures are caused by deformation. (silly putty)

14 Metamorphic Classification
Contact metamorphism: Happens when rock comes in very close contact with a magma chamber. This forms more from heat than pressure. (pancake batter) Regional metamorphism: happens when rock is under tremendous pressure from plate tectonics. Forms more from pressure than heat. (peanut butter cookies pressed with a fork)

15

16 Basics: Which are nonfoliated?

17 We heard it, we did it, now let’s see it again!
Metamorphic Rocks Review (3 min) (14 min)
