1 Good Morning Homeroom Specials – PE
Please take out daily math supplies from backpack: Homework (if assigned) Prepare for Morning Work

2 Monday – PE Tuesday – Computers Wednesday – Library
Specials – 2nd quarter Monday – PE Tuesday – Computers Wednesday – Library Thursday – Music/Band Friday – PE - Band

3 Morning Work Your whole family ate a lot of turkey. Mom ate 3.7 oz, Dad ate 6.2 oz., your sister (or brother) ate 4.5 oz. Finally, the dog ( or cat) was able to sneak a few pieces, as well (1.8 oz.). A. Round the amount of turkey eaten for each person to the nearest whole number. How much turkey did your family (including the pets) eat? B. Add the actual total of turkey eaten. How many ounces? C. How many pounds?

4 Fluency: 700 ÷ 10 800 ÷ 20 800 ÷ 10 ÷ 2 15,000 ÷ 30 15,000 ÷ 300 15,000 ÷ 100 ÷ 3

5 Module 2 Lesson 17

6 Objective Use basic facts to approximate quotients with two-digit divisors.

7 With your partner – solve on white board. (5 min)
12 With your partner – solve on white board. (5 min) 852 pounds of grapes were packed equally into 3 boxes for shipping. How many pounds of grapes were there in 2 boxes? First, divide 852 by 3. We now know how much would be in each box. 284 Now, multiply that amount by 2 to find how much would be in two boxes. 284 x 2 = 568 pounds of grapes in 2 boxes

8 402 ÷ 19 400 What is the dividend? What is the divisor?
Let’s round the divisor first? 20 We need to round the dividend that can be easily divided by 20 Think of multiples of 20 closest to the whole number. 400

9 Now use mental math to divide 400 by 20.
400 ÷ 10 ÷ 2 20 149 ÷ 71 Round the divisor, round the whole number (hint: round to a multiple of 70)

10 Round to the nearest multiple of 70 which is
140 140 ÷ 70 is the same as 14 divided by 7 How do you know? Explain 140 ÷ 10 ÷ 7 or (140÷10) ÷ 7 14 ÷ 7 2 is the estimated quotient

11 In your journal: Lesson 17
Estimate the quotient: 427 ÷ 58 1. Round the divisor 2. Round the dividend Find a multiple of the rounded divisor closest to the dividend.

12 Divisor rounds to 60 List multiples of 60. 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420, 480 Which multiple is closest to 427? 420 Our estimated expression is 420 ÷ 60 or 420 ÷ 10 ÷ 6 (420 ÷ 10) ÷ 6 42 ÷ 6 7

13 In your journal: Follow the steps to estimate quotients and solve this problem with your partner. 751 ÷ 93 Round divisor to 90 Round dividend (whole number) to a multiple of 90 720 720 ÷ 90 8

14 Summary in journal. What did you learn today? How to estimate quotients by rounding divisors and dividends using multiples of the rounded divisor.
