So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 4 2 Timothy: Structure Explicit:
This letter falls into a set of individual units which are difficult to bring into a cohesive whole. Much more personal in character. Much more impassioned in nature than the cooler more “Senior Pastor” letter of 1 Timothy or Titus.

5 2 Timothy: Purposes Explicit:
So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, (2Ti 1:8 NIV) Timothy & Titus never mention suffering as part of Timothy’s ministerial duties. This gives 2 Timothy as completely different feel. Paul’s physical suffering seems to be from the State (in Roman jail; 2:9). But the real suffering he describes comes from being abandoned by his co-laborers (1:15; 4:9-18)

6 2 Timothy: Purposes Explicit:
In 2 Tim, suffering does not seem to arise from the World (e.g., As in Romans or Revelation) but from internal sources; from the Church herself. Identifying the precise source of one’s ministerial pain is a grey area.

7 2 Timothy: Purposes Explicit:
There is no explicit church setting addressed (e.g., No Ephesus). The Epistolary situation is that Paul’s ministry is coming to an end (4:6-8). Timothy is to follow Paul’s model (not as replacement apostle) but as leader of the church in the world.

8 2 Timothy: Purposes Explicit:
No real mention of equipping others to follow in His or Timothy’s footsteps (except 2:2) Most verbs are 2nd person singular imperatives. Little instruction informing Timothy how to train others or their ministerial qualifications (contra 1 Tim 3). Exception in 2 Tim 2:24 Rather the teaching tone is basic doctrine with personal ethical consequences.

9 Instructions to Timothy
Come Soon Salutation Note the Salutation Almost identical to 1 Tim: Command of God vs. Will of God Added “According to promise of life” (see Titus 1:2) Genuine child in faith vs. beloved child (are we to hear inheritance language?) Theme of “Mercy” is still central (2 Tim 1:16, 18) Reference to Paul as Apostle may hint to a larger reading audience than just Timothy. Closing Teach Through Suffering; Paul’s Model Be Strong & Teach; Timothy's Calling Thanksgiving Leader and Opponents Un-Godliness and Need for Truth Closing Charge to Timothy Closing Remarks - Instructions 1:1-2 1:3-7 1:8-18 2:1-13 2:14-26 3:1-17 4:1-9 4:9 4:18 4:19-22

11 2 Timothy - Greeting I thank (lit: I have grace) to/for God,
▪whom I serve (worship?), as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, ▪constantly remember (lit: I have [for you] remembrance) you in my prayers night and day ▪longing to see you, recalling your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. ▪I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
