1 Experiencing the use of Michael White’s Scaffolding Questions: The Four E’s
Sally Bowen SYSTEMIC Practitioner Trainee Family Therapist DAFT Conference 17 November 2016

2 Introduction I am a Systemic Practitioner and Trainee Family Therapist currently undertaking my final qualifying year at University of Derby (MSc Independent Scholarship). I have been working as a Specialist Mental Health Nurse in CAMHS for 15 years. I am a founder member of the North Staffordshire Family Therapy Team which was set up in 2003.

3 My hope for this presentation:
Share the impact of the effects of experiential learning with my clinical supervisor and live training team as a family therapy trainee. Technique and Theoretical links Video Clip Invitation for questions, comments, reflections

4 Michael White’s Scaffolding Questions:
Building a “scaffold” to support change “on top of the scaffold” Positive sense/story of self Unique outcomes Problem solving skills Exceptions to problems Options “Under the scaffold” Stuckness Problem saturated Negative sense or story of self

5 Building a “scaffold” to support change
Explore, why/how come, Explain Evaluate actual or potential affects Maps effects in various domains Specific Experience/ Exception

6 The Four E’s Explanation (Justification) Evaluation (+ Or – or 0)
Effect (Relationships) Experience (Exceptions) Gary Robinson (2010)

7 The Four E’s Explanation: Why?, How come?
Evaluation: Is this positive, negative or no difference Effects: helping the person notice the effects, on anyone connected with the person (family, self, peers, colleagues), contexts (home, work, social), current and future (hopes, dreams, aspirations, future) Experience (exceptions): time/event when different, other time/event when different, tracking/mapping what, when how

8 Video Clip: I would like to share with you parts of a video recording from a experiential learning with my clinical training team supervisor, witnessed by my training team colleagues

9 Practice, Practice, Practice
“scaffolding questions is acquired through practice, more practice and then … more practice!” Michael White (2002)

10 The impact then and over time
At the time I experienced this conversation as a very powerful one. I felt connected to my abilities, to the positive achievements and change I’d started to make. It connected me to my family of origin and the important messages and values I hold dear. I continue to think and reflect about this conversation (it has stayed with me)

11 Thank you for listening
The End Thank you for listening
