1 Year 5 Curriculum Evening

4 Class Masses: We will let you know of dates.
Core Subjects RE 3 sessions per week. We following the diocesan planning grids that enable children to gain a deeper understanding of their faith. See curriculum sheet for more information. Class Masses: We will let you know of dates. English Children will develop speaking & listening skills, reading comprehension, writing, poetry, grammar and punctuation over a series of many topics. There is a bigger focus on reading a wider range of books from English literary heritage. MP

5 English RE

6 We welcome your support in helping develop these skills at home.
Core Subjects Writing will be a big focus this year. We will help build a variety of writing and compositional skills with the children this year by exploring rich examples of texts. Handwriting focus Spelling We welcome your support in helping develop these skills at home. MP

7 Core Subjects Maths 4 sessions per week and 1 session of Problem Solving with their class teacher. Children will learn skills across whole range of maths areas including number, measurement, geometry and statistics. There will be a focus on arithmetic and reasoning (applying). Please see curriculum handout for Autumn topics. Science 2 sessions a week. Topics cover areas in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Topic names and key vocabulary can be found on the Autumn curriculum sheet. The children will have plenty of opportunities for practical work to build their understanding of the world around them. 9 Maths

10 Indoor and outdoor lessons on a Tuesday, delivered by the J&C team.
Foundation Subjects: P.E Indoor and outdoor lessons on a Tuesday, delivered by the J&C team. History/Geography One session per week. Children will learn about ‘Ancient Egypt’ and ‘History of Our Local Area’. Children will be studying ‘Rivers’ and ‘Our Local Area’ as their Geography topic. Geography skills will also be covered during the teaching of our History topics. BR

11 Foundation Subjects: Computing
We study various topics throughout the year including E-safety, Text and Multimedia, Data Logging, Digital Research and Stop Animation. Music 1 session per week. The children will have the opportunity to learn a variety of popular songs and build on their musical skills. Links will be made with other topics covered in other subjects. D.T./ART 1 session per week. Children will further develop their designing, making and drawing skills focusing on the work of various artists. There will also be cross curricular links. French 1 session each week, following a French scheme which aims to develop speaking and listening skills. MP

12 Reading ‘Those who read succeed’
Outside School Homework Homework will be given out on a Thursday and due in the following Tuesday. Maths homework will be given by their Maths teacher. Reading ‘Those who read succeed’ Please encourage your children to read, with you or by themselves, every night. On your handout, there are a list of questions you could ask your children after reading with them at home. Questioning is just as important as reading. Spelling There will be a weekly spelling test which the children will need to revise for. Spellings will be handed out at the end of every spelling test on a Thursday. KP

13 Outside School Attendance/sick notes, lateness:
Please call the office and provide the school with a letter. Punctuality is key as lessons begin at 9am. For Abbey Mass, children should be at the Abbey from 8.30 Help at home All help is extremely welcome. Vocabulary / dictionary and handwriting work. Visiting the library and museums. Talking about their work. Lots of reading. Parents/guardian homework. Parents concern You can make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher. Always advise of any personal issues. BR

Additional Information Uniform Please ensure children wear the correct school uniform. Hats must be worn to and from school. Additionally, children should continue to bring a red St. Gregory’s rucksack to school PLEASE LABEL ALL UNIFORM AND PE KIT and LUNCHBOXES. Abbey Mass Every Friday unless told otherwise via text. We very much appreciate any parents/guardians who are able to walk back with us from the Abbey to school. (Front entrance used on the way back). MP

15 Additional Information
Behaviour Encourage good behaviour/bedtimes/homework completed and signed/discuss warning ladder. Parental support crucial in supporting school & teacher with behaviour issues. Sports Clubs - Children are given all the necessary information in school. Information is also on the school website. KP

16 Walking home from school - permission slips needed.
Reminders Walking home from school - permission slips needed. Main entrance must be used for all meetings and presentations in school. (All visitors must go through the main entrance to enter school. No other access is permitted). Walking to school, biking or scootering to school, park and stride and car pooling is encouraged. BR, MP, KP
