2 Nature of the Work Maintaining regular preventative patrols and assisting motorists and other members of the public. Conducting criminal and non-criminal investigations. Assisting in the regulation of traffic and enforcing vehicle and traffic laws. Maintaining public order and responding to emergencies, civil disorders and disasters. Pursuing suspects and effecting arrests.

3 Education and Training
Specific educational requirements for state police vary by state. State police generally must possess a high school diploma, and an associates degree or 60 semester credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning at time of application. Must usually be a state resident, have a valid drivers license and be a U.S. citizen. Police are also required to pass an oral test, and under go a medical examination, drug test and psychological evaluation. They must also complete training at the State Police Academy.

Many agents have job shadowed previous agents to get on the job training. Many states also require you to have a license and some organizations offer certifications to show agents areas of expertise

13 Potential Earnings The median pay of insurance agents in 2010 was about $45,000. Many agents are paid by commission only and the amount depends on the type of insurance sold. The top ten percent made more then $100,000 average and the lowest ten percent made about $25,000 average.
