Unit 2: Kinetic Molecular Theory and Phases of Matter
Review Homework Lab: Molecules in Motion Notes: Kinetic Molecular Theory and Phases of Matter Lab :Temperature and Density Homework: Checkpoint #3 next class- explaining the formation of covalent bonds.
2
Lab: Is Matter Moving? Goal #1: What observations can I make to support the claim the molecules in matter are in motion? Goal #2: What observations can I make to describe the relationship between temperature and molecular motion.
3
Notes: Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter
Molecules are always moving. Because molecules are moving they have kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is found by the equation K.E. = 0.5mv2 Therefore, kinetic energy increases with speed. We measure kinetic energy as temperature.
4
Lab Results: Which water has the highest kinetic energy
Lab Results: Which water has the highest kinetic energy? How do you know?
5
Review: Density Density is a measure of the amount of mass in a certain amount of space. Density = mass / volume Matter floats or sinks based on its density. You can increase density by increasing mass while keeping volume constant OR by decreasing the volume while keeping mass constant.
6
Lab: Temperature and Density
Goal #3: What observations can I make to support the relationship between temperature and molecular motion using density.
7
Notes: Phases of Matter - Solids
Matter that has a definite shape and volume. Molecules are packed together tightly and move slowly. Lowest energy phase.
8
Notes: Phases of Matter - Liquids
Matter that has a definite volume but flexible shape. Molecules are loosely packed together and move with greater speed than solids. Mid-energy phase.
9
Notes: Phases of Matter - Gas
Matter that has a indefinite shape and volume. Molecules are so loosely packed and move so fast that they will fill any container. Highest energy phase.
10
Which phase has the largest KINETIC ENERGY value? Lowest? Explain.
