1 Middle School Activities with the TI-Nspire CX™ Handheld
Maria Benzon CAMT Houston, TX June 25, 2015

2 Agenda Introductions Creating a Cheat Sheet: TI-Nspire CX keys and functions (15 min) Regular and Irregular Computational Tasks (15 min) Share Out: Aha! Hmmm… Huh? (10 min) “Say It with a Survey” Activity (20 min) Resources (10 min) Reflections and Follow-Up (5 min) This hands-on session will feature a variety of middle grades activities using the TI-Nspire handheld.  The TI-Nspire is capable of computations with fractions and has a wide array of available representations including circle graphs, bar graphs, dot plots, histograms, and box and whisker plots.  Much more than just a graphing calculator.  TI-Nspire handhelds will be available for use.

3 Quick Introduction of Audience Members
Are you…. Learning Together A 6th grade teacher? A 7th grade teacher? An 8th grade teacher? A high school teacher? Teams of 3-4 at each table Introduce yourselves Name # Years Teaching Favorite Math Topic Leader (Y/N) On a scale of 1 (none) - 5 (very) How proficient are you in using the technology below to help students learn math? TI 84+? TI-Nspire Touchpad? TI-Nspire CX?

4 Session Objectives Participants will be able to…
Math Content Knowledge Focus on middle school topics *Computations (with fractions) * Graphical Representations: circle graph, bar graph, dot plot, line plot, histograms, box and whiskers Technology Knowledge Acquire basic skills (not for experts) to continue exploring CX capabilities Learn about other TI resources Pedagogical Content Knowledge Integrate graphing technologies into lessons to enhance learning for all students

7 Regular and Irregular Computational Tasks (in Scratchpad)
Fractions & Decimals Symbols GCF/LCM Add three-fourths and five-sixths Multiply 5 and pi What is the GCF of 250 & 400? Subtract one and four-ninths from two and two-thirds Calculate 5 factorial What is the LCM of 25 & 40? Convert five-sevenths (fraction) to a decimal Calculate the square root of 12 What is the prime factorization of 14750? Approximate to a fraction Calculate nine to the fourth power (Explore) Is there more than 1 way to access features or solve a problem?
