1 The Effective Preceptor
Module 2 Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine

2 The 3 Critical Elements Orientation Facilitation Feedback

3 Effective Precepting It is important to understand why this module has been developed before we discuss how to facilitate and provide effective feedback. 21st century pedagogy BUILDS fluency in technological information and media fluencies 21st century pedagogy TEACHES contextually 21st century pedagogy IS inter-disciplinary 21st century pedagogy WORKS collaboratively

4 Effective Precepting Continued
21st century pedagogy USES project-based learning 21st century pedagogy FOSTERS problem solving 21st century pedagogy ASESSES transparently 21st century pedagogy DEVELOPS thinking skills

5 Preparing for Your Student(s)
Schedule the initial meeting with the student for the purpose of discussing the following items. A checklist is provided in the form of a PDF document as a resource to help in this process.

6 Orientation Recommendations: Initial Meeting with Student(s)
Practice overview and tour of facilities (spaces, materials, procedures including workflow processes, breaks, written documentation, etc.) Introductions to staff and office support personnel Patient population Allied health services (system-based practice) Scheduling and routine Student level of participation in history taking and physical exam Patient processing (what can the student do to support the office workflow?)

7 Orientation Recommendations:
Contact information (scheduling, questions, etc.) Communication expectations (cell, texts, timing, etc.) Professionalism and decorum (dress, arrival time, cell phone, etc.) Work space (phone, breaks, locker, security, etc.) Setting clear expectations – from you to the student and from the student to you Rotation objectives (student’s and yours) Mode of operation (leadership style, permission levels)

8 Orientation Recommendations:
Feedback system (meetings, timing, process) Evaluation(s) Reflections and challenges Legal restrictions (EMRs) Patient education This serves as a best practice checklist to assist you as the preceptor in orienting your student to your practice and clearly defining expectations for both parties. The orientation process helps to reduce potential future conflict and opens lines of communication.

9 The 2nd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is FACILITATION
The following are best practices regarding facilitation recommendations. A checklist is provided in the form of a PDF document as a resource. Setting goals and expectations Role modeling using “Think Out Loud” strategy Success in the teaching / learning process is always attributed to the creativity of the teacher. An effective teacher has to choose the best strategy to help a student better understand concepts being taught.

10 The 2nd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is Facilitation
Suggested strategies are: See one, do one, teach one * overview, illustrate, emphasize, check for understanding * student talk through, perform supervised, self-assess, feedback Use question strategy – challenge their thinking by: * probing for evidence * teach general rules * say what’s right and correct what is wrong

11 The 2nd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is Facilitation
Additional suggested strategies are: Use case studies … small to large Book of guidelines Mini conference before each patient Give “situational” reading material See what the student can do independently

12 The 3rd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is FEEDBACK
Timing and Setting *most useful following the experience * process established during orientation * formative and summative – brief en route encounters

13 The 3rd Critical Area for Effective Precepting is FEEDBACK
Effective feedback characteristics: Specific and performance based Descriptive, not labeling Based upon objectives and observable behaviors Provide two-way communications Based upon trust, honesty, concern (relational) Private, particularly if giving a correction
