3 What is Height Mod Height Modernization
Activities undertaken with the intention of making the establishment of elevations easier, cheaper, more accurate, and more consistent. Started as a Joint Effort between NGS and California The San Andreas fault caused issues with establishing accurate elevations in California Too expensive to continue leveling between bench marks with ground moving so often Newer technologies were making the establishment of elevations cheaper than ever

5 Height Mod in Indiana (2 of 2)

6 Past Activities (Continuum of Geodetic Control Projects)
Mid – Late 1990’s First Two Phases of Indiana High Accuracy Reference Network Early 2000’s Third Phase of Indiana HARN Mid-2000’s Public Land Section Corner Perpetuation Digital Submission Ordinances Initial Support for InCORS Initial Grant Proposal for Height Mod (2006)

7 Height Mod - Continued After California, Height Mod Expanded to Louisiana Subject to surface subsidence due to the removal of underground oil and gas deposits Expanded to Wisconsin Because of forward thinking DOT personnel as well as federal congressional delegation Example used was a typical DOT aerial mapping project By 2007 Some 15 States Funded by NGS

8 Height Mod Time Line for Indiana
2006 Initial Grant Proposal to USGS for Matching Funds 2007 Indiana Height Mod Forum Converted Indiana from Uninterested into an Interested State 2008 Developed Height Mod Roadmap and Report
