Grade: 7 Lesson: Map Scales
2
MAP SCALES A scale is a statement of the relationship between the size of a feature on a map and its actual size. It is also used to measure distances between points or places on a map.
3
TYPES OF MAP SCALES A scale can be represented in many ways on a map. These include:
4
TYPES OF MAP SCALES 1. Statement Scale: this is given in words. For example, 1cm represents 1km. It can also be written as 1cm: 1km. This means that one centimetre on the map is equivalent to one kilometre on the actual ground.
5
TYPES OF MAP SCALES 2. Linear Scale: this is a line divided into equal parts called segments. Each segment represents a given distance on the actual ground. A linear scale is the most commonly used scale for measuring distances.
6
TYPES OF MAP SCALES 3. Representative Fraction: this is written as a fraction or ratio. This can be shown as 1:50,000 or 1/50,000. In this example, 1 unit of distance on the map represents 50,000 of the same units of distance in the real world.
