1 The future of / in the research library
Tasks, development, strategies Lecture at the Royal School of Library and Information Science, forfatter

2 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
The purpose of a university library: Give and secure access to the information that is a necessity for research and education at the university/college/research institution Secure information on the research made by the university/college/research institution (teacher, researcher, student) Pass on critical information literacy to students (+ teachers and researchers) – best in collaboration with other teachers at the university/college/research institution) Support research at the university/college/research institution and contribute to raise the university’s reputation/prestige and economic foundation by registration and securing the research results and by supporting the researchers and the scientific work at the institution (As a public library) Let all collections be at the disposal of external users, e.g. regional research- and educational institutions, the business community and citizens from all over Take part in the joint national and international library partnership and through this develop the organisation and support own services Carry out research- and development projects within the subject and functional areas of the library

3 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Challenges/trends: The library’s role at the mother institution: meaning, importance, relevance, influence Budget challenges Increased (continuous) demand for accountability and profitability –”impact” The definition of ”the library” will change and is changing rapidly Continuous explosive development in mobile aggregates and services Changes in further and higher education make demands on skills and competencies (and qualifications) The technological development continues The development of scientific communication and services in relation to the intellectual property right and copyright Research data management, data capture, storage and documentation User driven services and patron driven acquisition

4 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
This leads to: Differentiated and mobile user services Access to the digital as well as the physical library 24/7/365 The library as a service becomes invisible The library as a place is visible, but it is used for lots of other things than the ”old” library The collection based services belong to the past – the espertise based services are the future Everything you need is a browser E-science is a continuously growing area at the research- and educational institutions and will be the main future field for libraries User rights and copyright are extremely challenged Service and business cooperation is a rising demand The library could become the place where new technology is tested and ”lend out” (academic IT lab)

5 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Extracts from a library strategy – RUC ( ): Strengthen the learning university by fortifying the students’ information literacy Contribute to develop ”learning spaces” by improving the interior og and the access to the physical library room Connect the physical campus environment and the virtual future by improving the access to the virtual library through better design and services adapted to university policies Assist strengthening (boosting), promoting and making the university research visible by means of specific research- and researcher services Strengthen staff competencies and organizational development Make engagement with the surrounding society Increase the employment of partnership and consolidation

6 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Strengthen the learning university: Integrate information literacy in curriculum Increase course material in digital format – digital course packs Develop spaces and services in cooperation with the users – with reference to informal learning, personal and group studying, reflection Increase library opening hours with unmanned and access-controlled periods

7 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Develop learning spaces: Increase library opening hours Improve access to the virtual library through better design and services Observe and develop library spaces by means of user inquiries, user experiences and user needs Offer access to library spaces at the users’ convenience Optimize safety and conservation by means of the most recent technology

8 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Connect the physical campus environment and the virtual future: Expand and integrate access to digital collections (and printed collections if needed) to deliver more content and better services to the users’ virtual and mobile environment Boost the use of digital ressources Prioritise digital content when it is the most effective – and when possible Build up expertise in relation to user rights, copyright, plagiarism, research integrity etc. Deploy mobile and most recent web-technologies and give flexible, userfriendly access – and embed it in learning spaces and learning- and research platforms Develop intuitive navigation – and link open data and documents

9 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Strengthen, promote, and make research visible: Expand and boost the visibility and impact of the university’s research – by open access as far as possible Incorporate library staff as partners in the research process through expanded research support Focus the research capacity of the library on participation in the university’s research projects Take part in handling, planning and conservation of research data

10 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Strengthen staff competencies and organizational development: Develop staff competencies at all level by new ways of thinking, via flexibility, via training and pedagogical effort and with coperation at the heart Current evaluation and development of the organsation – its needed competencies, tasks, processes and services (quality, efficiency and optimal resource exploitation) Monitoring performance and benchmarking Promote general as well as diffentiated services to the library users and use feedback to develop innovative and responsive solutions to user needs and to make services better in an open and useroriented culture

11 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Make engagement with the surrounding society: Expand services towards alumni Expand and boost the visibility and impact of the university’s research – by open access as far as possible Expand the use of the library space Create and ensure cooperation, involvement, formation of partnership and participation Increase engagement in initiatives and outreach activities toward the university

12 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Partnership and consolidation: Studies, measurements and quality assurance - performance Efficiency improvements and streamlining – through cooperation and partnership Take active part in university indeavours to make efficency improvements and streamlining internal work processes and support of administrative procedures Local, national and international library cooperation according to user and research premises

13 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
DEFF-projects: E-learning, information literacy and library services Digital learning objects, Library-impact Research documentation and communication ORCID, OA-Taskforce, Danish National Research Database Practical Data Management (Data management in practice) DM Planning, License administration

14 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
National tasks: National Strategy for Data Management (National Forum for Research Data Management) National Strategy for Open Access (National Steering Committee for Open Access) The Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (Ministry of Higher Education and Science and Universities DK) The Bibliometric Research Indicator

15 The future of/in the research library 21.11.2016
Needed competencies and qualifications: Teaching skills Communication skills IT-skills Data management Social media Bibliometric skills Analytic skills ”Spreadsheed skills” Negotiation skills Exhibition and conference arrangement skills Literary reviews, publication skills Research methods Basically all library activities will be outward-going in the future, so-called frontend-services. All backend-services will be presumably centralised or outsourced.
