1 Measles disease An acute viral infection spread via respiratory secretions or aerosols Classic manifestations: Maculopapular rash Fever +cough + coryza/conjuctivities Complications and mortality highest in children < 2 yrs. and in adults Case Fatality Ratio (CFR): Ranges from (0.1 – 10) % Up to 30% in humanitarian emergencies Can occur in vaccinated but disease is less severe and rarely fatal Viral multiplication occurs principally in the respiratory tract

2 Rubella & congenital Rubella syndrome
Rubella: A mild, self limiting viral illness (>90% infection in India is < 15 years) Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS): Rubella infection during early pregnancy may result in miscarriage, birth defects or fetal death Public health importance of rubella is due to its potential to cause CRS Burden of CRS is high in countries that have not introduced rubella vaccination Incidence of rubella substantially reduced in many countries through effective rubella vaccination

4 Complications Rubella Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS)
lymphadenopathy Arthritis Children: rare Adult female up to 70% Thrombocytopenic purpura 1/3000 cases Encephalitis 1/6,000 cases CRS is the most potential complication 90% chance if infected during 1st trimester of pregnancy) Hearing Impairment Cataracts / Glaucoma Heart defects ( PDA ) Microcephaly Developmental Delay Mental retardation Hematological disorder Liver and spleen damage
