1 GPS-Enabled Inhaler Final Design Cost of Materials Abstract
Michael Alexander, Joseph Cabelka, Mollie Lange, Peter Ma Advisor: Mitch Tyler, M.S. Client: David Van Sickle, Ph.D. Final Design Cost of Materials Abstract Components Asthma is a disease of growing public health importance and is unique in that inhalers and the medications they supply are often used at the exact time and location of symptom onset. By monitoring these factors in real-time instead of relying on patient documentation, patterns in symptoms can be deciphered and could help to identify common risk factors in populations. The goal of this project is to create a device that can store and transmit the time, date, and location of medication use by utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. Motivation: Tracking allergy/asthma symptoms is important for: - Outbreak control - General health studies in local or general areas Surveillance to this point has been limited to severe episodes that lead to hospital visits or patient recount Current Devices: Currently there are no competing products on the market, although GlaxoSmithKline holds a patent (6,958,691) for a similar idea that has not been fabricated or tested. sub procedure getlocation resp="GPSACP" got_loc = checklocation if got_loc = 1 then longitude = "good loc" if got_loc <> 0 then sendlocation Delay_ms(1000) Testing Future Work Design Criteria Must meet FDA standards for use Secure attachment for peripherals Withstand normal wear - Waterproof, does not damage on impact, etc Wireless with battery power; rechargeable Optimally reusable between inhalers/medications Accurate GPS coordinates : within 20 ft Cost less than $300 per unit Additional Miniaturization and program expansion Clinical Testing CDC Study Mass production Patent Disclosure Project Schedule SEMESTER 1: PROOF OF CONCEPT SEMESTER 2: FABRICATION SEMESTER 3: TESTING IRB approval for clinical testing Add intelligence to microcontroller Full integration with asthmap.org web software Testing Prototypes FUTURE: CDC study with 120 more devices Miniaturize more if technology exists Further miniaturization might be possible with the proper tools and equipment. Prototype Iterations Prototype #1: Large battery, Always-on program Prototype #2: Small battery, Always-on program Prototype #3: Large battery, Sleep program Prototype #4: Small battery, Sleep program Results Average battery life for the Always-on program is eight hours for the small battery. Using the Sleep program and small battery, the unit needs to be charged once weekly (assuming normal use of 4-5 exascerbations daily) Always-on program boosts accuracy but does not speed up coordinate transmission. Acknowledgments The Team would like to thank Professor Mitch Tyler, Dr. David Van Sickle, the UW Cartography Lab, Amit Nimunkar, and Dave Markovich at the Medical Electronics Lab for their support and assistance, without which this project would not have been possible.
