Figure 1 This illustrates that low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and its cholesterol (LDL-C) are synthesized in the liver and released into the circulation. The liver is also responsible for removing LDL-C from the circulation. The circulating LDL-C binds to the LDL receptor (LDL-R) on the surface of the liver cells, which internalizes the LDL-C/LDL-R complex to be degraded.
