1 Backflow Programmes for Territorial Authorities
Presented by Jonathan Lewis Backflow Prevention Ltd

2 We are the same in? Like you I'm an end user and so is my family, no matter where we go in New Zealand We all have a vested interest in protecting our water supply from the source to the outlet. (point of use) Water is a FOOD so it’s worth our time

3 Opinion My views and opinions are just that, MINE, at the end of the day we both want the same thing. Safe potable water. We just might have a different opinion on how to get there. It’s ok, my wife generally has a different opinion to me, I’m used to it!

4 Public Health Risk Management Plan
What does it mean to you?

5 A Barrier! When it comes to the perceived increasing of our work load or $ spend, we are very good at putting barriers in the way to slow progress.

6 Barriers to backflow prevention programs
Its Crap Never happens Just a fallacy No record of it We don’t have a problem Apathetic No money Boss is not interested Don’t care Go away we don’t have time

7 Change!

8 How?

9 Extend your Goal, think BIG.
To protect the water supply from the source to outlet. (point of use) “A complete backflow prevention program”

10 My question is? Who is going to lead your Complete BF program.
How much support are they going to get. What authority will they have.

11 I suggest you have already started!
Water supply engineers Have knowledge of water systems Already has knowledge on Backflow Prevention Has data base What else?

12

13

14 Get everyone together that needs to be involved
Water engineers Compliance officers Storm water & waste officers Planning Health Dept MAF Who else?

15 Another Barrier When it comes to the perceived increasing of our work load we are very good at putting barriers in the way to slow progress. Lets put off today, that which may never happen, and maybe! we can do it next year ????

16 Get people on your side Department training on Backflow Prevention What it is Know how Backflow Prevention effects them What they need to look for that will affect them How their liaison will affect other departments

17 What to look for What information you find may not have an affect on your particular department, but because of your training you now know that information will affect others, and who do you pass that information on too?

18 What does each department need
Leader How the information they gather effects the other departments. Where to post the information. How to access the information gathered that effects them.

19

20 You could say What a load of crap, all we need to bother with is our network, nothing more. Only interested in the water supply up to the boundary! We don’t have or want the resources to do any more. Let someone else do it!

21 I say A true Backflow Prevention Program is from the source to the outlet (point of use) Anything less is a token gesture. We all have a duty of care. Get over yourself and become a team player not a stumbling block.

22 Summary For liaison in regards to Backflow Prevention the general public and contractors need leadership. How serious are you about having a complete backflow prevention program or are you into tokenism. There are people in this room that may be able to help you, just ask. Change your view (although its easier not to) You want to have a complete backflow program Excellent!!! It just starts with a decision
