1 The First World War. A. In this beautiful art installation commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the war, red flowers spill over the Tower of London and onto the grounds below. B. Each of the 888,246 British military deaths during World War I is represented by one red ceramic poppy. C. Gas masks used by soldiers to protect against sulfur (mustard) gas, named for its smell. Unfortunately the mask was ineffective against the sulfur droplets that remain on skin and other surfaces; this first use of chemical weapons produced horribly painful, rarely fatal burns. During and after the war the country was overwhelmed by soldiers recovering from blindness, disfigurement and loss of limb, necessitating rehabilitation in the form of occupational therapy.
