1 The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction
Framing the Lesson Power Zone Recognize and reinforce Frequent, small group, purposeful talk Write critically The Fundamental 5: The Formula for Quality Instruction

2 Academic issues and Social and behavioral Issues
Academic recognition – Readily give recognition to the high achievers Miss the opportunity to recognize the interim levels Academic reinforcement – Reinforcement of the work/effort it takes to achieve a certain level of academic success. Observant teachers will notice significant amounts of effort on a student’s part and will act based on this understanding.

3 Benefits of Academic Reinforcement and Recognition
Recognition of success at any level provides students with the motivation to continue in their pursuit of academic success. Reinforcement – Reinforcement of the work/effort it takes to achieve academic success builds habits. The harder you try, the more successful you are.

4 Social and behavioral Issues
Recognition – from the social and behavioral perspective, R & R addresses the principles of personalization and specificity Personalization – simply providing clarity in relation to who is being addressed. Specificity – addresses the need to clearly state the behavior or action that warranted the attention. Reinforcement - the reinforcement of the behaviors that the teacher wants to see more of, and the removal of reinforcement for behaviors that the teacher wants to see less of.

5 Implementation Create a list of 2 to 5 targeted student behaviors or accomplishments you want to encourage Personalization and specificity Frequency and quality is key = revise the list and add new ones Recognize student effort and improvement An A is worthy of celebration but so is a 15 point improvement Teachers need to rely on and support one another The willingness to ask for and/or offer help changes the dynamics of the PLC from…. one where many pretend to be perfect to one that recognizes that improvement in INSTRUCTIONAL craft requires COLLABORATION and SUPPORT.
