8.28 Describe the significance of the Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, and the Mayflower Compact in relation to the development of government in America. (C, H, P) 8.33 Describe the principles embedded in the Constitution, including the purposes of government listed in the Preamble, separation of powers, check and balances, the amendment process, federalism, and recognition of and protections of individual rights in the Bill of Rights. (P)

The Constitution assigns some powers to the federal government and other powers to the state government State Government State governments Concern themselves with the needs within each state. States have a constitution that can be amended 3 branches: governor (chief executive), judicial and legislature (Nebraska has one house legislature)

4 State Services Enforcing the law Protecting Private Property Regulating business Building and maintaining highways Operating state parks Supervise education by setting standards and funding programs Local Government (Counties, Cities, and Towns) Local governments = most of the money is spent on education (staff, books, supplies, maintain buildings, etc.) Required to meet state standards Local Government = firefighters, garbage collectors, maintain local roads and hospitals, provide sewer and water, libraries, parks and recreational facilities, safety inspections of building and food establishments.
