2 Road Map The current state of VIEWS
Website Integrated haze database contents Annual data summary VIEWS database architecture and the new data query wizard Plans for the next 8 months and Discussions

3 VIEWS Purpose National air quality data integration, analysis and delivery system supporting the better understanding and analysis of haze and the implementation of the Regional Haze Regulation Provide ready access to data* from multiple networks; derived data products; and data analysis and display tools to all RPOs and the public. *ambient air quality, meteorological, summary emissions data Promote the use of quality-controlled, well-documented, high quality data and data products. Enhance the technical knowledge, skills and resources of data users. Reduce costs, increase efficiency and minimize conflicting data analysis results that would be associated with multiple separately developed systems.

4 Needs and Objectives Migrate the WRAP ambient monitoring online database website to the VIEWS website. – Came on-line in September Expand the online integrated database by adding data from monitoring networks throughout the United States. Existing networks have been expanded Addition of new networks in progress: First batch end of Dec Prepare the annual data summary of the IMPROVE and IMPROVE protocol data. - Version 1: end of December Enhance and add new data access and analysis tools New data query tool: end of December

5 Visibility Information Exchange Web System

6 Datasets Identified to be in VIEWS
Note: available - when the new query tool comes on-line – end of December

7 Datasets Identified to be in VIEWS

8 Integrated Database Contents
Selected subset of available data Subset of metadata – loosely follows NARSTO/EPA supersite metadata standard Monitoring site information Parameters Method of collection and analysis Type of instrument – IMPROVE, FRM, Nephelometer Filter analysis – PIXE, XRF, IC Ambient vs STP Frequency and duration Status and quality control flags Include just enough metadata to enable users to make informed decision on data use, e.g. merge with other data networks; compare to models.

9 Data Access and Analysis Tools
Network and monitoring site metadata Graphical products Ad-hoc queries to online integrated database based on location, parameter and time Database included all calculated composite aerosol components and associated light scattering and extinction Data filtering and aggregation is coming Raw and summary data ASCII files Air Quality Data IMPROVE data CASTNet AIRS data (NAAQS) Special studies PM Supersites State (non AIRES) data NADP Satellite data Model results

10 VIEWS Ambient Annual Data Summary
An on-line report containing routine and novel data analyses of IMPROVE aerosol data. The data, graphics and descriptions will be made available over the web enabling users to search and browser them. A primary use of these results is to allow people to easily download subsets of the results to produce their own data analysis report. Future summaries will evolve with new analyses and distribution tools based upon user feedback and needs.

11 Annual Data Analysis Summary Content
Contour maps of the major aerosol composite species for the best and worst 20% and average visibility days. Aerosol and light extinction budgets for the best and worst 20% and average visibility days. Monthly bar charts Seasonal and annual pie charts Composition of the individual best and worst 20% visibility days for each site Aerosol and light extinction trends Airmass histories (back trajectories) Each analysis will be accompanied by a description and the calculation algorithms. (Over 10,000 plots per year excluding back trajectories) First report for 2001 See scope of work for detailed description (available from the website)

12 Annual Summary’s Evolving Purpose
Browse and retrieve high quality derived and aggregated data products Create, archive and database graphical products Display pre-generated graphics in a browser and searching / report generating tools Explore aggregated data – ability to inter-compare data and examine daily data. Database aggregated data values Dynamically derive aggregated data from raw data Explore data by generating graphics on the fly based upon user selected options

13 Current Product Inventory
Category Available Planned Contour Maps Annual aerosol light extinction, dv, and major aerosol components Annual and seasonal means, Annual best and worst 20% days High quality images Absolute and relative values Budgets Best and worst 20% composition pie charts. Ability to select sort variable Annual and seasonal bar charts Budgets for best and worst 20% bext days Pie charts for the individual site/date pairs Annual time series of daily bar charts Trends Long-term annual and 5-year rolling averages for major parameters Time Trends Arrow maps Back Trajectories ATAD trajectories at all IMPROVE sites. All days available. Timeline selection highlights best and worst days based on three sort variables HYSPLIT/Monte Carlo generated trajectories for best and worst 20% days All data products are available from Only 2000 products were initially planned. Extra component not specified in Scope of Work

14 What’s Next (8 Months) - Website and Dbase
Website – basic maintenance and minor modifications Integrated Database Maintenance and Enhancements Solidify database architecture Further develop data ingestion tools Enhance and add to the quality assurance tools Make hand free Update existing network’s data Homogenize metadata

15 What’s Next (8 Months) – New Datasets
Datasets to be added IMPROVE and State Agency nephelometer data BRAVO aerosol data Datasets we are considering if the stars line up NPS Gaseous species AIRS PM10 data – (need to establish a direct link to AIRS) RPO special study data? GAViM – Speciated aerosol data at 4 southeastern Canadian sites (similar to IMPROVE data)

16 What’s Next (8 Months) - Tools
Data query tool (Version 2 - end of Dec.) New output formats Enhance site filters/selection/display Help file Submit custom SQL statements

17 What’s Next (8 Months) - Tools
Annual Data Summary (Version 1 - end of Dec.) Add links to tables of data -January Improve the graphics Add seasonal and daily aerosol and bext composition bar charts Add descriptions of figures and aggregation algorithms Integrate views, e.g. composition should display contour maps and back trajectories. Help file Metadata browser Migrate to “.Net” Enhance browsing e.g. site selection/filtering Merge ASCII data file retrieval and metadata browser

18 What’s Next (8 Months) - Other
OLAP - Excel Pivot Tables will probably not be developed. The effort is going into the online aggregated data explorer Incorporate CAPITA’s DVoy trajectory and residence time browser ?? Changes based upon Steering committee feedback Losing Rodger for 2 months
