2. What Are Navajo Code Talkers?
Over 400 Native American Soldiers transmitted wartime messages by using a code in their native language.

3. Backround
The use of Navajo Codes started in World War I. American Indians communicated battle messages with each other in their tribal languages over the telephone
After WWI veterans heard of this success, the army recruited Native Americans to transmit codes during WWII.
About 29 Native Americans were recruited each week to develop a code within their native language as a result to this ongoing success. The Marine Corps were impressed with their hard work towards memorizing the codes and helping the Army.

4. Significance of Navajo Code Talkers
In both World Wars, WWII especially, the code talkers provided fast communication to the U.S. Forces over open radio waves.
The code talkers had to memorize over 600 code words in their native language and have the ability to respond to the signals quickly.

5. How The Code Was Constructed
Type One Codes: The original 29 code talkers developed special codes based on their native languages. For each letter of the English alphabet, the code talkers came up with a familiar word to represent it (ex: C= Navajo translation for Cat; D= translation for Dog).
Eventually, the code talkers developed special code names for military terms such as countries and types of weapons, ships, planes, and officers.
