Simile: a direct comparison between two essentially unlike things, introduced by the words “like” or “as” Examples: Jose runs like the wind. She is as mean as a witch. Marie was as pale as a ghost.

Metaphor – a direct comparison between two dissimilar/unlike things without using “like” or “as” Examples: My life is an open book Michael is a fox. The vacation was a heartbeat in time.

Personification – giving human qualities/traits to an inanimate object Examples: Lightning danced across the sky. The wind howled in the night. Rita heard the last piece of pie calling her name. The avalanche devoured anything standing in its way.

Hyperbole – the use of over exaggeration for emphasis or effect. Examples: I could sleep for a year This book weighs a ton. I am so hungry I could eat a horse.
