1 Sewing Skills Level 3/4 – Week 1

2 Prior Knowledge – Sewing
Who has done some hand sewing before? What did you have to do? What skills might be involved?

3 What skills will I need for sewing?
I will need to know how to thread a needle. I will need to know how to tie knots (for sewing). I will need to learn how to do basic stitches (hand sewing). I will need to know how to make features and clothes using interesting materials (puppet, costume, prop, hat or head piece etc.)

4 I can tie a simple knot. 1. Make a loop near one end of the string
2. Feed the end through your loop 3. Gently pull each end of the string

5 Immersion 1 – Practice Tying knots
Knot Tying Immersion 1 – Practice Tying knots 1 I can follow the steps to tie a simple knot. I can double my string over and tie two knots on top of one another. I can teach knot tying to a peer. 2 3 © Auburn Primary School adapted from Lane Clark

6 I can practise some basic stitches.

7 On Weebly there are tutorials for:
Threading a needle using the needle threader Basic stitch – running stitch Basic stitch – overstitch Decorative stitch – blanket stitch Decorative stitch – French knot How to sew a button 1. Watch a video tutorial 2. Practise the stitch on your hessian square using your needle and thread. 3. Choose a different technique and repeat!

8 Immersion 2 – Sewing Practice
Sewing Techniques Immersion 2 – Sewing Practice 1 I can thread my needle and tie a knot. I can watch the YouTube tutorials (on Weebly). I can practise basic sewing techniques. 2 3 © Auburn Primary School adapted from Lane Clark
