1 RDA, LC-PCC Policy Statements, and MLA Best Practices Updates
Damian Iseminger, Chair, RSC Music Working Group Mary Huismann, Chair, CMC Content Standards Subcommittee My name is Damian Iseminger and I am currently the chair of the RDA Steering Committee Music Working Group, which is charged with assisting the RDA Steering Committee (or RSC) in revising and developing instructions for describing music resources in RDA. The members of the Working Group are Jim Alberts and Valerie Weinberg from the Library of Congress; Jean Harden, University of North Texas; Mary Huismann, St. Olaf College; Kevin Kishimoto, Stanford University; Morris Levy, Northwestern University; Daniel Paradis, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec; and Anders Cato, European RDA Interest Group.

2 RDA Music Proposals MusicWG/1 MusicWG/2
Revisions to RDA 7.11, Place and Date of Capture New element, RDA , Note on Capture Information RDA 7.11 re-titled as Capture Information MusicWG/2 Small changes to RDA , Plate Number for Notated Music This past year the Music Working Group developed 4 proposals which were accepted by the RDA Steering Committee at their meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, held November 7-11, The new instructions will appear in the April 2017 update to the RDA Toolkit. [click] The proposal MusicWG/1 added a new instruction titled “Note on Capture” to RDA 7.11, the instructions for recording the place and date of capture. This new instruction will allow one to record details relating to the capture of a resource, such as whether a recording was from a live broadcast or the type of equipment used in the capture of content. RDA 7.11 has also been re-titled as “Capture Information.” [click] Proposal MusicWG/2 made some small changes to the instructions for recording plate numbers, but will not impact current cataloging.

3 RDA Music Proposals MusicWG/3
Revisions to RDA 6.15, Medium of Performance Instructions simplified to allow for flexibility Closed lists of terms removed If possible, medium of performance terms should come from an external vocabulary Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus UNIMARC Medium of Performance Proposal MusicWG/3 changed the instructions considerably at RDA 6.15 for recording the medium of performance. Time does not allow for an in-depth examination of the new instructions, but what I will say is that the instructions have been simplified to allow for more flexibility in recording the medium of performance. The other major change is that all closed lists of terms in RDA 6.15 have been removed will instead instruct one to use an external vocabulary for medium of performance terms, which in our case would be the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus.

4 RDA Music Proposals MusicWG/4
Revisions to RDA and , Additions to Authorized Access Points Representing Works Condensed into a single instruction May be used for AAPs containing a preferred title for a type of composition or a distinctive title Current practices for AAP construction are mostly maintained Proposal MusicWG/4 condensed the instructions for additions to authorized access points currently found at and into one instruction. While the changes may appear to be considerable in this section, the impact on authorized access points should be limited.

5 RDA and Medium of Performance
If recording medium of performance in a 382 field, apply RDA 6.15 and any other relevant standards If recording medium of performance in an authorized access point, consult both RDA and RDA 6.15 I want to stress that RDA treats the recording of medium of performance in RDA 6.15 as different from how medium of performance appears in an authorized access point, which is governed by the instructions at RDA In other words, if you are just recording medium of performance in MARC field 382, you only need to consult RDA 6.15, plus any other applicable external guidelines. However, if you are creating an authorized access point which includes the medium of performance, you should consult RDA in addition to RDA 6.15 for how that medium statement should be formed.

6 RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R Project)
No new proposals accepted until at least April 2018 Restructure of the instruction repository Bring in line with current data management best practices Make data more modular and dynamic Allow RSC to track and manage metadata more effectively After the RDA Toolkit update in April, there will be a moratorium on proposal submission until the RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign, or 3R Project, is complete, hopefully by April [click] Quoting from the October announcement: “The restructure portion of the project will involve a major rebuild of the instruction repository in order to bring it in line with current data management best practices, make RDA data more modular and dynamic, and allow the RSC to track and manage a greater range of metadata associated with the instructions. The restructure of this data is closely tied to the glossary synchronization platform that was rolled out this past August. The restructure will also include upgrades to the editing and translation tools. [The co-publishers] will also explore new solutions for tracking the history of revisions and mapping of RDA to other encodings.

7 RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R Project)
Redesign of the RDA Toolkit Compliance with accessibility standards Improvements to navigation and display Entity-based view of the instructions The redesign portion of the project will include adoption of a responsive design and a plan to bring the site in compliance with established accessibility standards. [The co-publishers] will also investigate improvements to toolkit navigation, display, and features with the goal of creating a user experience that is more intrinsically of the web. A new entity-based view of the instructions will replace the current Element Set view, and the Workflow HTML editor will be updated and improved.”

8 RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R Project)
IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM) Alignment New entities in RDA for Collective Agent, Nomen, and Time-span Implicit entities of Agent and Place made explicit Subtyping of existing entities Person, Family, and Corporate Body under Agent and Collective Agent Another major part of the 3R project will be to align RDA with the IFLA Library Reference Model, formerly known as FRBR-LRM. According to the announcement on the RSC Website, “three completely new entities will be added to RDA: Collective Agent, Nomen, and Time-span. Two other entities that are already implicit in RDA, Agent and Place, will be added and consolidated. The existing RDA entities Person, Family, and Corporate Body will become entity sub-types of Agent and Collective Agent, and the associated instructions will be generalized where appropriate.” More will be said about LRM later in the Town Hall. Mary Huismann, Content Standards Subcommittee chair, will now talk about LC-PCC Policy Statement Updates and MLA Best Practices updates.
