4 Persian Gulf War Background: Iran-Iraq War neither side won despite US aid to Iraq Iraq under Saddam Hussein weakened after war Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990 Hussein claimed that oil fields on their common border were being siphoned by ‘slant drilling’ Kuwait refused to forgive large debt and increased oil production which depressed oil prices and reduced Iraqi oil income UN Security Council voted US sponsored resolutions: Condemning Iraq & demanding its withdrawal from Kuwait Imposing embargo & trade sanctions cutting off its oil exports UN voted to use force if Iraq didn’t meet January 15th deadline Jan- Feb 1991 « Desert Storm » US led coalition of 30 nations in a 7-week war successful invasion of Iraq from Saudi Arabia, but Hussein remained in power
