Hussein claimed that oil fields on their common border were
being siphoned by ‘slant drilling’
Kuwait refused to forgive large debt and increased oil production
which depressed oil prices and reduced Iraqi oil income
UN Security Council voted US sponsored resolutions:
Condemning Iraq & demanding its withdrawal from Kuwait
Imposing embargo & trade sanctions cutting off its oil exports
UN voted to use force if Iraq didn’t meet January 15th deadline
