1 SPSS Examples from Our Homework

2 Problem 2.2 Present the frequency of fish as part of a Finnish Christmas dinner compared to all other nationalities as well as to American and Vietnam Christmas dinners. Go to Data / Split File Either Compare Groups or Organize Output by Groups by Nationality (Question 33) Run frequency for fish with dinner question (3e) Remember to go to Data / Split File and Analyze All Groups when finished

3 Simple Regression (1 IV)
Go to Analyze / Regression / Linear Look at Problem 2.5 Plug in the dependent variable (estimated % of gifts purchased online, Question 13c) Plug in the independent variable (age group, Q31) Look at the adjusted R square (that shows how much variance in the DV is explained by changes in the IV)

4 Simple Regression (Significant Example)
You can use linear regression for virtually any query Problem 2.9 To what extent can you use people’s responses to “Christmas traditions are important to my family as a whole” (Q2i) to explain or predict their responses to “Christmas traditions are important to me, individually” (Q2j)? Go to Analyze / Regression / Linear Plug in the dependent variable (Question 2j) Plug in the independent variable (Question 2i) Look at the adjusted R square (that shows how much variance in the DV is explained by changes in the IV) Note that, unlike the previous example, this is a significant finding

5 Multiple Regression (More than 1 IV)
Go to Analyze / Regression / Linear Back to problem 2.5, part II Plug in the dependent variable (estimated % of gifts purchased online, Question 13c) Plug in the independent variables (age group Q31 plus residence type Q35) Look at the adjusted R square (that shows how much variance in the DV is explained by changes in the IV)

6 Multiple Regression (More than 1 IV)
Go to Analyze / Regression / Linear Problem 2.17 Use regression analysis to explain which factors best explain their chocolate purchasing decisions for the Christmas holiday. Plug in the dependent variable (do you buy chocolate for the Christmas season, Question 22) Plug in the independent variables (all parts of Question 27) Look at the adjusted R square (that shows how much variance in the DV is explained by changes in the IV) Then repeat, but use Stepwise method (option before running regression) I recommend Stepwise method when running multiple regression

7 Problem 2.6 Support or deny the hypothesis that females buy more presents than males do. Then specifically compare men and women between 16 and 25 years of age and see if one group buys more gifts than the other. Yes, you can use regression for this as well Go to Analyze / Regression / Linear Dependent variable: Number of gifts (Q13b) Independent variable: Gender (Q32) Should be significant Repeat after Selecting cases (If Q31=2) After proving significance, can check frequencies (means) by comparing genders and running frequency tests for Q32
