1 In this lesson we will: Find out how much we already know about the flags of the UK. Learn about the history of each flag. Check if we all know the patron saints and symbol. Create an alternative UK flag which will include England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

2 The making of the UK When the Stuarts became monarchs of both England and Scotland, they started to create the modern United Kingdom that we have today.

4 Why is this called the Union Jack?
Union refers to joining together England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. It should really be called the Union flag unless it is being flown on a ship.

5 You are going to see a series of flags and flowers
You are going to see a series of flags and flowers. Do you know which country each one belongs to? Do you know the names of the saints represented by the flags?

13 Ireland was divided into two parts in the 20th Century.
Northern Ireland stayed part of the UK. Southern Ireland became the Republic of Ireland and is totally independent. In the 17th and 18th century, they were all part of the same country.
